NCAA March Madness Tool

Article #6 10/5/07

Now we have enough of this year’s data to show something in our weekly file.  Welcome to our sixth edition of The Edge.  Our goal in this weekly column will be to give you an edge in the world of fantasy football.  Unlike typical fantasy columnists, we have developed a statistical model (which is easy to use and free for download here: @ ihavetheedge.com) that we will use as the basis for our recommendations and analysis.

We will focus on finding the “Edge Sleeper” since anyone can tell you LaDainian Thomas, Peyton Manning, Chad Johnson, etc… are good picks. “Edge Sleepers” are defined as picks not found in the top 5 and mostly likely not in the top 10 by various publications.  In the end, the goal of a weekly sleeper pick is to find someone on your bench or maybe even available as a free agent to be scoring near the Top 5 for that position.

QUARTERBACK

Jason Campbell, Washington

Campbell hasn't been spectacular this season, but he's matched up with a Detroit defense that allows 268 yards passing per game. Lions-Redskins could be a shootout.

Joey Harrington, Atlanta

I wanted to pick someone which should definitely be available in free agency.  I can’t believe I am recommending Harrington, but the stats don’t lie.  Atlanta has had a semi-hard schedule and also the obvious turmoil to deal with.  Tennessee doesn’t have the best pass defense so if you need a QB Harrington may produce some decent numbers this week.

RUNNING BACK

Ahman Green/Ron Dayne, Houston

Monitor Green's injury status (questionable as of 10/3). I cringe at suggesting Ron Dayne for anything, but Miami's run defense is horrendous right now. Whoever starts for Houston should have a good day.

Marion Barber III, Dallas

Marion still not getting the respect he deserves in the fantasy world.  Last week it was a breeze and so they didn’t need him.  Buffalo looks to be better than St. Louis.  They do have 1 win against the Jets.

WIDE RECEIVER

Patrick Crayton, Dallas

It's always risky chasing a player's earnings from week to week, but Crayton should follow up his 184 yard output with another good week. Buffalo is dead last in pass defense and is decimated by injuries.

Andre Davis, Houston

Another players chaser – why not?  Andre came off a great game last week with 5 recepetions and 117 yds with a TD.  If Andre Johnson is still MIA then Andre Davis gives you a decent shot at getting some points.
